Heidi’s Biggest Challenge…

June 5th, 2008

So here is the deal. I REALLY think people should be more giving. I understand some cant give monetary gifts but what about your time and other resources. Coming home to the US was hard for me in some ways, and one of those is the fact that those from the United States are pretty selfish and self absorbed. IT is all about ME mentality! Or at least that is the mentality I have seen. I am not saying all are like that. I know a lot of very giving people as well. But what could else could you do? Are you looking for needs around you? So here is the challenge, make it a point to be alert to those around you and find needs that you can fulfill! Go the extra mile. Give. And if you do something great, I want to hear about it. I want to see how you are giving back. We have been given so much. So give…give…give.

Here is an example:

Last night I went to target with my son Chandler. Target was closing and all the lines were full and there were like 4 cashiers. (side note…why do they have so many registers if they don’t have people to man them?) Anyways, there was a single mom in front of me with 4 kids. The kids were tired. She was trying to use her food stamps to buy her groceries. And about 8 dollars was not being covered. I have seen that before, so I know she was not trying abuse the system. Sometimes Target doesn’t cover what wal-mart does. Anyways, she did not have the 8 dollars, and they register lady was going to have to re-ring up everything. And since it was food stamp money they did not know if they could even do that since part had already gone through. So I asked if I could pay for the rest of her stuff for her. She was a bit shocked at first and said no. Well the kids were getting more restless as the cashier was trying to figure out how to re-ring up everything. I asked again, please let me buy the rest for you…it is no problem i assured her. She finally said yes, and all of her kids came and gave me BIG hugs.

Now I don’t tell you my story so that you can say, oh look what Heidi did. I tell you because it is easy to find needs around you if you listen and keep your eyes open. And what a great lesson for my son. Someone said to me, well I just don’t know if it is what God wants me to do, I need to pray about it. I know most things need prayer, but keep in mind you can NEVER out give GOD. God says to give…end of story. I did not need to sit there and pray before I did what I did. Give, and watch how God uses you. You also don’t know who you are going to touch and how that one act of kindness will touch that person. I want to hear about. So leave me a comment if you go the extra mile!

I read this post the other day and thought of it again today. I was leaving a store in our area when a woman flagged me down. She said she was trying to get to work on the other side of town and needed $7.00 for gas. She said she would send it back to me if I wrote down my address. I gave her the $7.00 and told her to keep it. The funny part was that $7.00 was the exact amount of cash I had on hand.
